Vredenheim – The Big Cats Park

Meet a lion, cheetah, leopard and tiger – up close and personal!

Did you know that you can meet lion, cheetah, leopard and tiger – up close and personal – without having to leave the beauty of the Stellenbosch winelands? It’s true, and they’re all waiting for you at the estate!  Vredenheim’s owners, originally long-time game farmers from Dundee in Kwazulu Natal, have a great passion for big cats and opened a Big Cats Park in October 2011 at Vredenheim to educate the public about these majestic animals and their behaviours. The park is  fully approved by Cape Nature, and is currently home to 3 brown lions, 2 white lions, 2 caracal, 1 cheetah, 1 leopard and 2 Bengal tigers. These animals are purchased from approved breeding programmes. Vredenheim is not allowed to breed them further, rather provide a place of sanctuary for these beautiful creatures, where the public can enjoy them and learn more about them. Their enclosures are large and spacious, and offer each cat their own “creature comforts”, such as a play area and swimming pool for the tigers, long grass for the leopard and cheetah, and a big, comfortable rock for the male white lion to sun himself on during the day.
