Jan Marais Nature Reserve is a small protected area located in Marais Street, close to the centre of Stellenbosch. The nature reserve was opened in 1919. The reserve ‘s approximately 23 hectares is roughly divided into a disturbed area (3-4 ha) and a undisturbed area with roughly two veld types namely Swartland Fynbos and Swartland Renosterveld. It is rich in magnificent fynbos and filled with very beautiful indigenous trees. The reserve is for everyone’s enjoyment. Picnics, Wine Tasting, Cellar Tours, Hiking Trails, Mountain Biking, Horse Trails, Animal Feeding, Bird Watching a play area for children and a labyrinth designed by Terry de Vries a well-known South African artist. There are numerous sculptures including mollusc type structures that surround the natural pond at the lower end of the reserve. It is well worth a visit.
